Sewage Treatment Plants
A treatment plant is a mechanical system that treats your sewage from your property and the final effluent is discharged into a soakaway or into the water course close to your property.
The primary settlement and bacterial growth remains in the plant and must be removed on a regular basis on average once per year from a normal domestic property. As with septic tanks, the frequency of emptying will depend on the property size and number of occupants.
To discharge into the water course you will need a Licence from the Environment Agency.
Pumping Stations
Pump Chambers are exactly as their title suggests, with effluent from your property flowing into the chamber where it is pumped away usually to the mains or to a soak away on higher ground than the property.
It is essential that pump chambers are regularly checked by a service engineer to avoid breakdown and a resulting sewage backup to the property.
It is also advisable that pump stations are periodically emptied and washed down and any fat and rag is removed so as the pumps do not get clogged and burn out due to jamming of the impeller.
Septic Tanks
Septic tanks are designed to handle daily effluent flowing from a household, they vary in size and capacity. Normally they are about 6-8 feet deep and 6 feet wide. They are watertight and this promotes the growth of anaerobic bacteria & biological decomposition of sewage and waste water.
Septic Tanks need to be emptied on a regular basis. As a rule of thumb most domestic properties tanks should be emptied every 12 months however the frequency of emptying depends on the size of the property and the number of people using the water system, to avoid damage to the soak away and waste water backing up to the property.
